Welcome to Talking Science
This webpage, and in particular the blog on this site, aims to put science communication under the spotlight. As a former newspaper editor before moving to media communications, it has been revealing to discover how both sides view and respond to each other. There seem to be so many misunderstandings on both sides.
In addition, the changing media landscape is bringing an end to the specialist journalist and adding seriously to the workload of those who remain. Many communicators see this only as a challenge but there are also a host of opportunities that, with just a little preparation, can allow us to deliver our stories the way we want them. That said, one of the greatest challenges facing science communicators in the early 21st century is the rise of intentional misreporting of some science in parts of the mainstream media. I get a great view of this aspect because - after working with environmental organisations, energy companies and in a boutique PR agency - I now do the media communication for more than 100 climate scientists in the university sector. If you ever wanted an opportunity to see the good, the bad and the ugly of science communication, try giving climate science a spin. I have now started working on an online guide for communicators (Comms 101 on the menu bar). I'll be regularly adding to this guide over the coming year and hopefully it will turn into a useful tool for other communicators. Feel free to send me your thoughts or suggestions. In general I hope you find this website useful and I look forward to any contributions, suggestions or insights you may have that can help science communicators become better at what we do. You can find everything you need on the menu above that will lead you to the blog and, as time goes on, other resources on the web.
